About the Maker

My name is Jessica Poljacik, and I am the maker behind Sunny Village Ceramics. I offer small batch ceramics handmade in Vermont's "Sunshine Village”, where I live with my husband, two kids, our dog, cat, a bunny, and a variety of backyard wildlife. I work from home and am able to escape to my basement studio for short periods of time to create limited amounts of work, and fire work in my tiny kiln.

My work explores ideas of beauty and imperfection, with elements of simplicity, whimsy, and repetition. My medium is porcelain clay that I push to its limits allowing fissures, cracks and rips to form, reminiscent of the natural textures, tears, and decay seen in nature. I use my fingers to push and pull, to squeeze and tear. I use underglazes, glazes, and chosen bare clay to highlight my textures and forms. Through the use of handmade molds I incorporate natural textures from flower petals, plants, seashells, and other natural objects.

I find joy in creating items that are delicate, beautiful, and accessible. Using both hand-building and wheel throwing I create functional pots, and jewelry, inspired by the natural world, memory, and lore. My work is a small piece of art that can be used or seen everyday, a delicate mini vase with wildflowers picked by a child, a piece of jewelry adorning a body, a flower fairy displayed on a shelf.
